Melody plays
the piano

The first piano books for young children

/ DESCRIPTION
This was my dream project that was completed in the span of 14 weeks. It is an interactive + physical book series that inspire preschooler (age 3 - 6) to learn music in a fun and interactive way. The final dimension of the book is 8" by 8" with a sound module - light and pressure activated audio chip inside the physical book, so that music will play on each page turn. This book series comes with four volumes: "What is a piano?" , "Melody plays the piano", "Where is the sound coming from?" and "Let's play!".

WHY

Investing in an instrument like piano can be expensive. The drop-out rate for piano lessons is very high. How can we help spark more long-lasting interests?

Spark Interest

This book series aims to spark interest at an early age

Journey

Through the main character Melody, children can see the journey of learning music. It is not always easy!

Emotions

It's not just about boring practicing. Music allows us to express emotions.

PROCESS

Designing and testing the two formats: Analog sound book, and Interactive book app

Inspiration

In the 14 years I've been teaching piano, I always wished there was a less overwhelming instruction book.

I wish there was a fun book that teaches music to young beginners.

Testing

First analog sound book prototype was tested with arduino using a light sensor.

Second prototype was made with a sound module which can contain up to five mp3 files.

Toolbox

Thank you Melody, for being the free spirit and great inspiration you are.
